Yellow nails

Q: My nail beds are smooth and pink, but the suggestions are yellow. What causes this and how do i fix it?

A: It appears like your nail beds are healthy though the tips are stained, says Brand-new Orleans dermatologist Deirdre O'Boyle Hooper, MD. The nicotine in cigarettes can change your nails yellow, but I really hope that's not the root of your respective problem. (Smoking also causes facial lines and an unlovely smoker's pallor, not to mention a host of ugly health concerns. ) Instead, I'm going to assume that you're dealing with more common cause of yellowing: using nail polish. To eliminate your stains, Hooper recommends lightly buffing your current (unpolished) nails and soaking them for five to ten moments in lemon juice or, for anyone who is more ambitious, a slushy blend of two parts peroxide and just one part baking soda. Do the soak any day until you see a noticeable difference. To prevent restaining, use the protective base coat under your current polish, and give your nails a polish-free week every from time to time. But what if you're a nonsmoker as well as a nonpolisher? Then the staining can be due to aging. For which (inevitable) condition, run a whitening pencil beneath tips.

Keep in mind: If the remedies above don't work, seek the advice of a dermatologist; rarely, yellowing can be caused by an underlying condition.
